Indonesian operator Telkomsel has joined the M2M platform of Jasper Wireless.

In July 2012, seven mobile operators across the world — KPN, NTT Docomo, Rogers, SingTel, Telefónica, Telstra and Vimpelcom —teamed up to create an alliance to collaborate in the M2M space. They have since been joined by AT&T, América Móvil and Etisalat.

The collaboration aims to develop a global product featuring a unique SIM, united web interface and centralised management of status and usage of M2M devices globally, via Jasper Wireless’s Control Centre.

“This means that if you’ve got an enterprise customer in one part of the world using a carrier that uses the Jasper platform, then should that company wish to deploy that other region in the world, all it needs to do is find another carrier using the same platform. Then it will instantly be able to manage its devices across both markets,” Jamie Moss, senior analyst in the mobile content and applications division of Informa Telecoms & Media said at the time. “It would mean that carriers in the other markets have customers coming to them, simply because they use the Jasper platform.”

The firms said operators will agree on standards and technologies to use in the M2M space and expect to offer better value propositions to connected device manufacturers in different markets and geographies. Jasper said that its cloud-hosted platform enables enterprise customers to deploy and globally scale their M2M services rapidly, giving centralised visibility and control.

According to Jasper Wireless, the application of M2M out of Indonesia will especially benefit the retail, consumer electronics, automotive telematics, utilities and healthcare sectors.  To date, Telkomsel’s M2M service has served more than one million customers but the operator expects this figure to grow as more Indonesians adopt a “digital lifestyle”.
