Nokia cheers mobile widgets uptake

Finnish handset giant Nokia said Friday that it has racked up 1 million registered users to its WidSets platform worldwide.

WidSets was born out of Nokia’s Emerging Business Unit and launched in October. The platform uses widgets, or mini-applications, to deliver up to date internet content to mobile phones.

The platform is handset manufacturer independent and can be used to deliver social networking, news, blogs, reviews, and weather reports amongst other content, straight to the mobile. The WidSets library currently has more than 1500 widgets available.

“Having 1 million registered users in the mobile space is almost unheard of and WidSets has clearly set the benchmark for tools and distribution channels designed for content and media owners,” said Ulla Sarkikangas, director of Consumer Internet Services at Nokia’s Emerging Business Unit.

Nokia introduced widget support for the Symbian S60 OS in April, as its first significant step in “transforming mobility and the internet with rich Web 2.0 experiences”.

While widgets have been available on PCs for some time, Nokia believes they bring particular advantages to mobile devices, which are highly personal.

“Mobility will change the internet as people are able to access and create information specific to place, time and context,” said Tero Ojanpera, CTO of Nokia. “Widgets are an important milestone in this development. Introducing widget support for S60, much of the innovation seen on the internet today is being brought to the mobile space for the benefit of the millions of S60 mobile device users”.

To complement widget software on the S60 OS, Nokai introduced Web Run-Time, a web application development environment, enabling the development of widgets and integrated web applications for mobile devices with standards-based web technologies, such as Ajax, JavaScript, CSS and HTML.
