MTS Allstream selects Ciena for 100Gbps upgrade

Canadian telco MTS Allstream has deployed optical technology from US firm Ciena in order to upgrade its national optical fibre transmission network to support 100Gbps data transport.

The telco is using a combination of Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical Platform and network management software to deliver higher-capacity managed services across its network.

The upgrade has been made in response to customer demand for higher-speed services, and in particular to facilitate data centre connectivity, storage replication, cloud services and other bandwidth-intensive applications and services.

MTS Allstream has over 30,000 route kilometres across Canada, including 18,000km of inter-city fibre, and connects over 2,100 buildings across the country.
