OnePlus goes one better with new affordable flagship smartphone

OnePlus 3

Chinese smartphone startup Oneplus has launched its latest device designed to offer flagship smartphone specs at a lower price than the current market leaders.

The OnePlus 3 features a fast charging technology that, we’re told, allows a day’s worth of charge to be added in just 30 minutes. It also has an imaging suite called Smart Capture that offers post-processing tools such as digital noise reduction, and the latest Snapdragon 820 SoC. OnePlus uses an Android skin called Oxygen OS that is designed to be clean and uncluttered.

“We know that the best smartphone is the one that works exactly how you want it to,” said OnePlus Founder and CEO Pete Lau. “The OnePlus 3 delivers that experience. It combines what our customers already love about our products with what they want and expect next. For example, Dash Charge sets a new standard for fast charging technology. It’s a flagship smartphone inspired by – and made for – our fans.”

Any attempt to disrupt the smartphone market is a brave one, but the ‘flagship killer’ angle, which promises top-end specs at a significantly lower price point, seems as good as any. The OnePlus phones are generally well-reviewed, but as the likes of HTC and Sony have found, that doesn’t necessarily guarantee commercial success. The OnePlus 3 will cost £309/$399 and is avaiable immediately online and via some new ‘pop up stores in New York, London, Paris and Berlin.
