Samsung boffins develop skinny LCD

Electronics firm Samsung, has developed an LCD panel that could reduce the thickness of a mobile by at least 1mm.

The LCD panel is, according to the Korean company, the first that is able to produce independent images on both sides of a display. The double-sided display could, according to Samsung, usurp typical twin displays which would lead to an overall reduction in thickness.

The display uses Samsung’s double-gate, thin-film transistor (TFT) architecture and requires only one backlight.

The LCD is 2.6mm thick and 2.22″ wide, with QVGA (240 x 320 pixel) resolution. Samsung will exhibit the design at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), in Las Vegas from January 8.
