By its recent lofty standards, Samsung’s Q2 2014 smartphone shipments were a disappointment. In spite of the launch of the flagship Galaxy S5 in the middle of the quarter, shipments declined annually and it seems the strategy that has served Samsung so well may have run its course.

Apple wins big in Android patent dispute

The ongoing patent wars between mobile device manufacturers featured a decisive battle late Friday, when the jury deliberating on the argument between US company Apple and South Korea’s Samsung found against the Android-focused firm. The US jury awarded Apple damages of $1bn, after ruling that Samsung did indeed infringe several of Apple’s patented designs and features.

Apple blocks Samsung tablet sales in Australia

Apple has won an injunction to block the sale of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 Android tablet in Australia. The device was already temporarily banned pending the court ruling, and the ban has now been upheld until a full patent trial is held next year. Samsung had initially offered to modify the software on the device to counteract the injunction, but Apple’s argument stated that the device also copies the design of its iPad and iPhone products.

Samsung has been told it can no longer sell the Galaxy tablet in Germany

German court rules to ban sale of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab

Apple has won a case in Germany to prohibit the sale of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet device in the country.

The Düsseldorf court upheld the preliminary injunction secured by Apple, which claims that Samsung had infringed its intellectual property and copied the iPad.
