US operators will begin trials of an indoor coverage solution provided by Ericsson in Q2 next year, based on a small cell product that weighs just 300 grams. While it has not officially named a first trial partner, a comment provided for the product’s launch release puts AT&T squarely in the frame. Sebastian Tolstoy, head of business development and strategy for Ericsson’s radio division told Telecoms.com: “As you can see from the release the first operators we’ll go to market with are American operators.”
Ericsson is to sue Chinese rival ZTE, claiming that the latter has infringed on patents for its 2-and-3G technologies. Saying that the action represented a “last resort” following “several years” of attempted resolutions, Ericsson filed suits in the UK, Italy and Germany on Friday. ZTE has responded by saying its considering taking similar action against Ericsson.
The Afghanistan Telecom Regulatory Authority (ATRA) is currently in talks with the country’s four mobile carriers to gather opinion on the allocation of spectrum for next generation services. It is not yet certain whether the regulator will simply allocate spectrum to the operators or whether an auction will take place, however the aim is to have commercial 3G services in Afghanistan by the end of 2011.
New Zealand’s incumbent carrier Telecom has announced that it will cease operation of two of its CDMA services in the final quarter of this year. The WorldMode Roaming service will shut down on October 28th while the 3G EVDO data service will be switched off on November 30th. The firm will close down its CDMA voice network altogether in mid-2012.
