Cablevision to offer wifi only mobile service

New York-based cable service provider Cablevision Systems will start offering a wifi only mobile service starting next month, according to an interview by the Wall Street Journal. The report said the offering, dubbed Freewheel, will utilise the 1.1 million wifi hotspots it has deployed across the state.

Taqua acquires Kineto to form complete voice-over-wifi player

US company Taqua, which makes a virtual mobile core, has acquired Kineto, which provides voice-over-wifi (VoWifi) software for smartphones, with the aim of creating a complete VoWifi provider. They had already been collaborating extensively, including on Sprint’s wifi calling service.

EE holds off on VoLTE, announces wifi calling solution

UK operator EE, which was the first player in the market to launch LTE, has announced a £275m investment in its voice offering, including plans to deliver voice over wifi in domestic and enterprise environments and a bid to beef up voice quality in the busiest parts of its network. But the firm has ruled out a launch of Voice over LTE before the end of the year.
