As a principal engineer at Ericsson, Stephen Hayes has been extensively involved in the development of GSM and related systems such as LTE and IMS over the past ten years. He also holds a number of patents in the area of telecommunications.

This experience has given him the grounding to chair the 3rd Generation Partnership Project’s (3GPP), Technical Specification Group, Service & Systems Aspects (3GPP- TSG SA). The group is which is responsible for all requirements including architectural and system issues for GSM, UMTS, and LTE.

Now on his third election term, his role is also instrumental in achieving cooperation within the 3GPP structure and Hayes plays a key role liaising with standards bodies worldwide such as the IEEE and ITU. The Alliance for Telecommunication Industry Solutions (ATIS) is 3GPP’s North American organisational partner, and Hayes serves as an ATIS delegate to 3GPP.
