Nokia ships N77 DVB-H device

Leading handset vendor Nokia has started shipping its N77 DVB-H enabled device in its homeland of Finland, the company said Monday.

The terminal was announced in Barcelona at the 3GSM World Congress as part of a raft of new handset offerings.

Later this month the device will start shipping in Vietnam and India, two countries, from a small but growing list, in which DVB-H mobile television technology has a toehold.

The N77 is the second device from Nokia that features DVB-H technology for mobile television. The first was the Nokia N92.

Operators offering DVB-H mTV services are few and far between. Finnish operator Digita has a DVB-H network and later this month the device will start shipping in India and Vietnam where operators Doordashan and VTC currently offer DVB-H services. DVB-H services are also available in Italy.

“The Nokia N77 takes TV out of the living room,” said Jonas Geust, head of Nokia Nseries Players Category, Multimedia at Nokia. “The wide 2.4″ flat screen and high quality stereo sound makes it the ideal personal mobile device for enjoying TV programs on the go.”

Nokia predicts the mobile TV market will reach between 5 and 10 million handsets globally by the end of 2008 and around 20 million handsets by the end of 2009.

The jury is still out over which technology will be widely adopted by operators to drive mobile television. The smart money, as ever, is on a range of technologies delivering the much-anticipated service. However, the world’s number one handset maker, along with South Korean rival Samsung, is a strong backer of DVB-H.
