Greenland gets 3G network

Greenland’s only mobile operator, Tele Greenland, has struck a deal with Nokia Siemens Networks to bring 3G services to the far north of Western Europe.

NSN will roll out a WCMDA network using the operator’s 900MHz spectrum and will also upgrade the company’s core network and modernise Tele Greenland’s existing GPRS network.

Rollout of the network is expected to be completed in spring 2010 and Tele Greenland will start 3G services first in the capital city of Nuuk, with an option to expand the service in the more remote areas later.

Tele Greenland has a subscriber base of 57,200, with mobile penetration at almost 97 per cent at the end of June. The country is the least densely populated in the world.
