Operator group Telefónica will allow consumers in the US and Canada to buy mobile airtime in retail stores for family and friends who are Movistar subscribers in Latin America.

US and Canadian Telefónica subscribers can visit iSend retail outlets and purchase mobile airtime for Movistar-subscribing family and friends in Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru and Uruguay. iSend is an electronic payment service for people who support family members in other countries and has more than 150,000 stores in North America.

“iSend’s direct arrangement with Telefonica provides an excellent convenience to our customers while expanding our footprint in this key region for mobile top-ups,” said Dan Lambert, iSend’s vice president of carrier relations.

“We’re rapidly approaching the point where customers supporting family and friends in any Latin American country can purchase top-ups for their mobile phones serviced by any leading carrier.”

iSend customers can top up any family member’s cell phone with instant verification. Customers are not charged for the service beyond the normal price of minutes.
