Meeting Consumer Expectations

    Some interesting comments Jeff and Desmond, thanks. I’m wondering with 4G networks – WiMAX and LTE – there’s the promise of some impressive topline bandwidth rates, so does this mean that the value of optimisation is diminished? Or is it a case of users always finding a way to fill the pipes, so optimisation will always be required?

      As I referenced in the presentation itself, Bytemobile does not see the value of optimization diminishing as a result of a shift to LTE (for example). The additional capacity that LTE affords will be consumed pretty quickly. Again, we have seen this for years over in the fixed network environments as a comparitive example. LTE alone does not satisfy the huge growth we are expecting of Video traffic for example. We see the ability to optimize as way of making faster, bigger networks far far more efficient. Remember, the value of optimization is not just in reducing the data but also in driving a much better user experience. On a final point, we are now being approached by the fixed operator community who also see huge value in the ability to optimize video traffic. The video traffic growth explosion is across all networks. Its about building efficient networks that deliver excellent customer experiences!

      Im very excited about LTE and what it will bring to our customers. A number of traffic management techniques in your toolbox (of which optimisation is one) will remain a benefit for operators as network evolution cant be guaranteed to be a linear activity …where we can always guarantee to be able to build quicker than demand.

    Can optimization still be implemented if the stricter net neutrality provisions are implemented, which would not allow management of traffic or discrimination between different traffic flows?

      Net neutrality seems to have a different spin from one market to another. The important think for me is customer choice. To the best degree possible, we must allow our customers to choose the experience they want.

      An optimization platform is quite different from a platform like DPI. The optimization platform does not attempt to block user traffic. As stated (with heavy emphasis in the presentation) increasing the user expereince is a prime objective. The goal is to leverage ‘visually lossless’ techniques so that the user is not even aware his traffic is being optimized. I undertsand that net neutrality is a complex subject domain however we do not belive that we impact the mobile broadband architecture nearly as much as other network elements (such as DPI and Next-Gen GGSN etc). At the end of the day the operator must be the one to interpret how to build architectures and services around this subject area.
