Myanmar is becoming mobilised

Japanese operator KDDI Corporation and trade, retail and logistics firm Sumitomo Corporation have reached an agreement with Myanma Posts & Telecommunications to jointly deliver telecoms services in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.

A joint venture known as KDDI Summit Global Singapore (KSGS) has been used as a vehicle to establish a subsidiary, KDDI Summit Global Myanmar (KSGM) in Myanmar.

The southeast Asian country of Myanmar has a mobile phone penetration rate of approximately ten per cent in relation to a population of around 65 million and is expected to experience explosive growth in the future. KSGM said it aims to provide “Japanese-quality” services in mobile and fixed line communication by upgrading of the telecommunications infrastructure in the country as well as focusing on customer services in call centres and shops.

“Myanmar is experiencing a rapid move towards democracy and the market in mobile phones and fixed line communications is expected to grow dramatically in the future,” said Takashi Tanaka, President of KDDI. “Taking advantage of the wealth of experience and knowledge that we have built up both inside and outside Japan through our mobile phone operations in Mongolia, MVNO business in the US and other operations, KDDI will provide the same level of Japanese-quality services to Myanmar and contribute to the country’s growth and development.”
