Chinese equipment vendor ZTE has struck a deal with Brazilian operator TIM Brasil to jointly set up an innovation centre in the country tasked with spearheading developments in next generation broadband technologies.

The framework agreement between ZTE and TIM Brasil will run for the next three years and will focus on research in broadband technologies including XG-PON (passive optical network), NG-PON2 and G.Fast.

ZTE is already the biggest provider of broadband network equipment to TIM Brasil and since 2012 the two companies have been collaborating on ultra-broadband network deployments in the states of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo, claiming the most advanced broadband deployments in Latin America.

ZTE is also currently participating in a tenders for major ultra-broadband projects for the deployment of DSLAM equipment to TIM Brasil.

The operator is a subsidiary of Telecom Italia and claims the number two spot with a network covering 3,400 cities and 95 per cent of Brazil’s urban population.
