Three UK to introduce VoLTE later this year

Three, the UK’s fourth largest mobile network in terms of subscribers, has announced it will introduce voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) to its network later this year, possibly as early as September.

At a press event the operator also confirmed it introduce the 800 MHz spectrum it’s been sitting on since the 4G spectrum auction at the same time.

Both of these things had been spoken about previously by Three and this press event seems to have been aimed at the mainstream consumer and gadget press, designed as much for general-purpose publicity as anything else.

Bryn Jones, Three’s Chief Technical Officer, said: “Our aim is to keep our customers connected wherever they are,” said Bryn Jones, Three’s Chief Technical Officer. “Adding low frequency spectrum to our network and enabling voice calls over 4G and Wi-Fi will mean Three customers can stay connected in more places than ever before.”

Perhaps with EE’s wifi calling announcement in mind Three also took the opportunity to plug its Three InTouch app. “The Three inTouch app has been highly successful with over 1million users to date,” said Danny Dixon, Director of Customer Strategy at Three. “Seamless connectivity on mobile and wifi is a key part of our future strategic direction and by using the app, our customers will never miss that important call or text, whether they’re in the home, commuting to work, or away on holiday.”
