Nokia PR spamfest continues with next-gen fibre fun

Nokia seems to have decided that the best PR strategy for Mobile World Congress is to issue at least one press release a day for the whole of February.

Today’s bulletin concerned fixed networks, specifically a suite of fibre access goodies including a 10 Gbps PON (passive optical network) technology and point-to-point fibre. One specific claimed benefit is a greater ease of connecting small cells to the fibre network, but inevitably these launches are being positioned at helping operators get ready for 5G and all its presumed but as yet loosely defined opportunities.

“The biggest opportunity on the horizon for fixed networks is the arrival of 5G,” confided Federico Guillen, president of Nokia Fixed Networks. “It’s clear that 5G will require very high capacity and low delay, but what is less certain is just how much capacity will be required for backhaul and what latency will be sufficient. We take the guesswork out of the equation.

“Our solution allows operators to access existing PON networks that have virtually unlimited capacity to meet their needs today, with the added flexibility to add 10G PON evolutions gradually as demand for more bandwidth and services increases. The massive throughput and cell densification strategy of 5G make it a perfect match for existing FTTH deployments.”

It will be interesting to see if Nokia can keep up this prolific level of press release publishing for the rest of the month. In the final days before the start of Mobile World Congress we expect them to proudly announce the purchase of a new fridge for the staff canteen and to publicly congratulate Dave from accounts for not drinking since the start of the year and raising £97 in sponsorship.
