Amazon makes its IoT managed service generally available

AWS has been banging on about SiteWise, a platform designed to help businesses collect and process IoT data, for a couple of years.

Now companies everywhere have the opportunity to obsess over their every bit of kit, because AWS has polished its IoT managed service such that they think it’s ready for general consumption. As with most other AWS offerings, this one builds on the best practice Amazon has acquired from accommodating the world’s impulse-purchasing needs.

“Industrial customers tell us that getting their data into the cloud and using it to understand their operational performance is the biggest opportunity they see when evaluating IoT solutions,” said Dirk Didascalou, VP of IoT at AWS. “With SiteWise, industrial customers can now use the power of AWS to collect, organize, and monitor their industrial equipment data at scale. SiteWise will help industrial customers move beyond data collection and enable them to visualize and monitor all their equipment, so they can focus on their main job of optimizing their operations.”

SiteWise comes with all the stuff you would expect of an IoT platform, such as software, APIs and a cloud control interface. It already has some major customers, such as Volkswagen. “With SiteWise we are able to easily ingest manufacturing shop floor data into the cloud, model and organize those different machine assets within our plants, and then visualize operational data from our cylinder production line in a web application,” said Dr. Roy Sauer, Director Enterprise & Platform Architecture at Volkswagen Group.

AWS trotted out a bunch of other partners to deliver the standard supportive quotes, but you get the message. We’ll leave you with this totally relaxed and spontaneous lockdown vid AWS felt the need to make, to augment its message.
