ZTE unveils HSDPA TD-SCDMA handset

Chinese manufacturer ZTE took the wraps off what it claims is the world’s first HSDPA TD-SCDMA handset on Monday, the U990.

This latest device is ZTE’s third unit based on China’s home grown 3G technology, with the earlier units identified as the U980 and U981. However, the U990 is the first to incorporate HSDPA, and claims download speeds of up to 2.8Mbps and an uplink of 384Kbps.

The gadget runs on the Windows Mobile 6.0 operating system – another first for ZTE – and also boats a touch screen and GPS.

Last week the Chinese firm announced the shipment of its 100 millionth handset and lay claim to being the sixth largest mobile handset manufacturer worldwide.
