According to reports Portugal Telecom (PT) is considering setting up a pan-African mobile operator based in Angola.

Portuguese weekly, Visao, published an interview with PT’s CEO, Thursday, in which he reveals the firm’s thoughts on the emerging region.

“The big pan-African operators are centred in South Africa or in the Middle East but we believe in a new pan-African operator based elsewhere, namely in Angola,” Henrique Granadeiro told Visao.

PT already holds a 25 per cent stake in Unitel, an Angolan operator, with whom Granadeiro suggests PT could launch a new player. “It doesn’t mean we would make Unitel the centre of the operator but Angola is a good platform for the launch of a pan-African operator,” he said.
