Operators switch off Moscow's tube services

According to local reports, Russia’s three largest mobile operators suspended services in Moscow’s tube network Wednesday.

MTS, VimpelCom and Megafon told the Russian news agency Novosti that according to company representatives, the move could be connected to a terrorist threat in the capital city. The claims were “unofficial”, Novosti states.

If the Russian authorities give the all clear, it is understood the services will be switched back on by Thursday.

According to Novosti, Russia’s National Anti-Terrorism Committee said Tuesday it had obtained a report from unidentified “foreign sources” of a possible terrorist plot to attack ground transport and one of the country’s subway systems.

Two bomb explosions in Moscow’s metro system in 2004 killing 49 people and injuring more than 300.
