Acer unveils cloud-based consumer services

At CES 2012 Acer unveiled its plans for a new cloud-based service called ‘AcerCloud’ to help them develop a relationship with the consumers that purchase Acer’s electronic devices.

Telefónica and NEC launch cloud services in Argentina

Japanese vendor NEC has announced that Spanish incumbent operator Telefónica has launched cloud services in the Argentinian market using the NEC cloud platform. The two companies announced a strategic partnership in February this year to promote cloud computing in Latin America.

Three aims for connected devices market with Macheen tie-up

3UK has signed an agreement with Macheen, a cloud service provider for connected devices. The deal provides the operator with access to a platform for the management of a variety of processes that are required to create, manage and bill M2M-related services.

American programmer and entrepreneur Paul Buchheit has a CV that reads like Silicon Valley by numbers in terms of employers. Prior to his joining Google in 1999, Buchheit worked at Intel, Sun Microsystems and Microsoft. When he joined Google, he was employee number 23 and is credited with the creation and initial development of Gmail, as well as the prototype of AdSense.

Telefónica launches FonYou app in Spain

Spanish cloud telephony provider FonYou has announced that its XtraLine solution is now available to mobile operators as a white-labelled iOS and Android app. Spanish incumbent Telefónica is the first carrier to launch the app. The solution, which was deployed in a trial earlier this year by Telefónica, enables mobile operators to provide consumers with a second phone line bundled with a range of rich services like visual voicemail, call registers and advanced voice screening.

RIM rolls out BBM Music

Canadian handset vendor RIM has announced that it is rolling out its BBM Music service on a commercial basis following a successful beta trial.

Small cells still raising more questions than answers

Small cells promise to boost capacity and throughput in areas of high usage more cheaply than macro cell deployments, while allowing more efficient use of spectrum than macros, and providing improved coverage at the cell edge and indoors. Cloud-based gaming service launches in the UK

UK incumbent BT has announced the launch of a new cloud-based gaming service, in conjunction with OnLive. The service, which is available in the UK exclusively via BT Broadband, will enable customers to access more than 100 video games, streamed into homes via the internet. The system, which went live in the US in June 2010 eschews conventional games console hardware for content streamed from remote data centres using advanced video compression techniques to keep the bandwidth requirements manageable.

HP chief faces axe, as does WebOS

Leo Apotheker, CEO of struggling computer firm HP, may face the axe later on Thursday, as the company board meets to discuss his possible replacement. The flurry of rumours, which follows a year of strategic u-turns and missed forecasts, now points to Apotheker’s departure, just as the ill fated webOS project takes another blow.

Interoute builds on cloud services with Quantix acquisition

European backbone network operator Interoute has strengthened its offering in the cloud services space with the acquisition of UK-based Quantix. The purchase adds managed application services to Interoute’s unified computing and managed hosting portfolio, allowing the firm to manage international customers’ database applications, including Oracle and SQL, as a cloud based service.

HP kills mobile devices, buys Autonomy

Software and PC giant HP has unexpectedly killed off its poorly performing webOS mobile devices and announced its exit from the hardware space altogether. Instead the firm will focus on software and services with an eye on cloud computing through the $10bn acquisition of Autonomy.

Operators are renewing their enthusiasm for location as OTT players build their own means of accessing positional information on consumers. Marketing and advertising will be key, and success will be derived from expertise in context, content and customer relationship.
