Embedded SIMs to drive Internet of Things

A “task force” of mobile operators was established this week to explore the development of an embedded SIM that can be remotely activated. At the dawn of the Internet of Things, it is claimed such a move would help enable mobile broadband connectivity on non-traditional devices such as cameras, MP3 players, navigation devices and e-readers, as well as smart meters.

Telefónica and Jasper partner on M2M

Spanish carrier Telefónica has struck a deal with machine to machine specialist Jasper Wireless that will see the two firms partner on enterprise and consumer M2M solutions. The Telefónica Control Centre, the carrier said, will enable “M2M enterprise customers and device manufacturers to profitably connect and manage embedded mobile devices.”

Wyless signs Interoute for M2M backbone

Machine to Machine (M2M) managed services provider Wyless Group has signed a technical partnership agreement with Interoute, operator of a European fibre network to host three Wyless NOCs.

Verizon launches M2M management centre

Verizon has launched its Machine to Machine Management Center, giving enterprise customers near real-time access to monitor M2M wireless devices. Customers can access the platform directly through Verizon’s MyBusiness or the Verizon Enterprise Center, or through customers’ business-specific applications, developed using nPhase’s unified web services SDK. The solution is a product of nPhase – the joint venture between Qualcomm and Verizon Wireless.

M2M: a partnership-driven market with enough potential for all participants

Informa’s Embedded Connectivity event this September was spearheaded by an operator panel of unprecedented influence and expertise: Eric Brenneis, the Global Head of M2M at Vodafone; Emmanuel Routier, the Director of the International M2M Centre at Orange Group; and Angel Garcia Barrio, the Head of M2M for Telefonica O2. T-Mobile’s VP of Data Solutions and M2M, Mathias Elsner, was also scheduled to be present, but was unfortunately unable to be there on the day.

Australian carrier Telstra has upped its game in the machine to machine (M2M) space, introducing a web-based self-service platform, allowing organisations to manage M2M products themselves.

VimpelCom targets robots in Russia

Second placed Russian carrier VimpelCom has teamed up with machine to machine network specialist Jasper Wireless to bring what it claims is the first M2M platform to the Russian market.

The LTE connected car

At the LTE World Summit, held at the Okura hotel in Amsterdam recently, telecoms.com got to spend ten minutes sitting in an LTE connected car. The proof of concept device is made by Toyota with LTE gadgetry provided by Alcatel-Lucent.
