Reaping the full potential of 5G

As 5G is becoming mainstream in more markets, the fifth network generation promised users and the industry alike to offer ‘smart’ technologies and advanced use-cases, unleashed by 5G standalone (SA) capabilities such as zero latency and ultra-high reliability. We are also experiencing an explosion of new opportunities complementing 5G in the space of cloud and virtualisation, open-source networking, edge computing and private networks.

As such, Telecoms.com Intelligence in collaboration with Openet, CommScope, VIAVI, Red Hat and BICS conducted a survey to get the views of telecoms professionals in five key areas critical to the success of 5G today and tomorrow. These areas are the 5G Ecosystem, 5G’s Next Phase, 5G Security, 5G & Virtualisation, and 5G Private Networks.

Here are some of the key findings from the survey:

  • Three years from now, ultra-reliable low-latency communication is expected to have the greatest commercial significance
  • Transport and logistics, and manufacturing are the industries offering the best 5G revenue opportunities
  • Seven out of ten respondents think mobile operators should collaborate with cyber specialist firms to audit and monitor network security
  • More than half of respondents consider open-source software as very important or critical for 5G networks
  • The main 5G business driver is considered supporting the digitalisation of enterprises

You can download the report and see the details and analyses behind these headline findings and much more. In addition, we have included the full survey results in the report as an Appendix, for your easy reference.
