Software Defined Networking (SDN) has brought with it the expectation of reduced network complexity and a reduction in operational cost. This all stems from a fundamental abstraction of traditional control functions from network forwarding devices, such as switches and routers. The prospect of lower cost comes from the simplification of networking hardware, and the use of lower-priced, mass produced hardware performing forwarding functions.
