We are delighted to welcome another special guest this week – public cloud evangelist Danielle Royston. She had heard us slagging off the public cloud in previous pods and was keen to offer a more benign perspective. That chat took up nearly all of the pod but we did eventually get around to quickly covering the latest developments concerning China vs the US and internet companies getting into consumer devices.

Nice conversation, but I think you could have pushed Danielle a bit more on her vision for the operators “winning”. As you have pointed out the edge was supposed to be place where the telco vendors and the operators take back control from “big cloud”. And the operators failed due to multiple reasons.
The idea that an operator will develop a “multiverse” is really unrealistic. The SW skills needed are similar as the one needed to conquer the current cloud infra plus they will need a winning customer interface – and this is totally new area for a telco. Defacto they will have to become SW development companies first. How realistic is this happening?
Furthermore the operators are inherently disadvantaged – nobody holds more that 30-40% of the users in a country. Even if their service X is a killer, how likely is the people switching operators because of SW service? How likely is to convince your family and friend switching operators because of this service? Switching OTT service accounts is free and easy – here we have contracts, payments and legal obligations to consider. And if anybody can use the service over the internet, than what is my special sauce and how a telco will be different that a SW company anyway?
And one more thing – do you expect a multiverse from your energy provider?
Great feedback Ivan, thanks.
