MTN is looking into the possibility of acquiring a majority stake in fellow South African telco Telkom in a bid to challenge the country’s dominant provider Vodacom, a Bloomberg report has claimed.

Verizon to sell off towers and part of fixed-line business – report

Verizon Communications, the parent company of US operator Verizon Wireless, is about to sell off some of its assets including mobile towers and parts of its fixed-line business, a report by the Wall Street Journal has claimed. The company is said to be selling the assets in several separate deals whose value could be over $15 billion.

AT&T 2014 results show strain but top analyst expectations

AT&T has posted its 2014 full year results, showing financial strain as it made a loss of nearly $4 billion in the last quarter alone. However, the operator still managed to exceed analyst expectations, albeit narrowly as it earned 55 cents per share (excluding exceptional items), a penny more than expected.

AT&T set to continue Mexico expansion with Nextel acquisition

AT&T has announced it has entered into an agreement with NII Holdings to acquire its subsidiary Nextel Mexico for approximately $1.88 billion (less outstanding net debt). The move, which will increase AT&T’s Mexican subscriber base by three million if approved, comes shortly after the US telco completed its Iusacell buy.

AT&T begins forming US/Mexico single North American service area

US operator AT&T has announced unlimited calls at no additional cost to all Mexican numbers as part of its international World Connect Value offering. This follows AT&T’s finalised $2.5 billion acquisition of Mexican Iusacell last week, and could be the first sign of the US telco’s previously stated plan to create a single North American service area covering the US and Mexico.

Hutchison, Telefónica in merger talks over O2, Three – report

Hong Kong-based Hutchison Whampoa and Spain’s Telefónica are in talks over a possible merger of their respective UK subsidiaries Three and O2, according to a report. Following BT’s preliminary talks with owners of EE, Orange and Deutsche Telekom (DT), as well as Telefónica over O2, it was reported Hutchison was also preparing to bid for one of the two UK operators.

Essar exits telecoms with yuMobile sale to Safaricom, Airtel

India-based investment group Essar has completed the sale of its Kenyan mobile operator yuMobile, officially known as Telekom Kenya Limited (ETKL), marking the firm’s exit from the telecoms business. Fellow Kenyan operator Safaricom acquired yuMobile’s network, IT and office infrastructure assets, while Airtel has taken over its 2.55 million subscribers.

Telstra $697m acquisition of Pacnet goes ahead

Australian telco giant Telsta has confirmed it is proceeding with the acquisition of trans-Pacific cable and data centre player Pacnet. As ever the $697 million deal is subject to regulatory approval, but assuming it goes through it will give Telstra a foothold in China, a bunch of data centres and services including SDN (software defined networking).

BT formally moves to acquire EE in bid to dominate UK telco market

Liberty Global set to begin LatAm acquisition spree with Choice

Liberty Global has announced that together with investment firm Searchlight, it has signed an agreement to acquire Puerto Rican Choice Cable, the territory’s second largest cable and broadband services provider. If successful in its bid, the cable giant will merge Choice with its subsidiary Liberty Cablevision Puerto Rico (LCPR).

Vodafone has eyes on Liberty Global – report

In the wake of BT’s acquisition talks with the owners of EE and O2, Vodafone is reportedly considering a bid for the cable group Liberty Global. It has been reported the mobile operator already approached LG earlier this year, but found price expectations too high.

EE confirms BT talks, industry opinion divided

Deutsche Telekom and Orange, the joint shareholders of EE, have confirmed initial discussions with BT over a possible sale of the UK mobile operator. In a statement the German and French giants said they are exploring the possibility as part of their regular market assessment to evaluate different strategic options.
