UK telecoms regulator Ofcom has announced it will make the 700 MHz frequency band available for mobile broadband services, effectively moving broadcast TV and wireless microphones aside to make room. There’s no need for operators to reform their auction teams just yet though, as Ofcom doesn’t reckon it’s going to happen until 2022.
Australian carrier Telstra has accelerated the launch of LTE services on its 700MHz network and now expects to take LTE coverage to 90 per cent of the Australian population by the end of January 2015 after switching on LTE700 in all major cities.
Taiwanese operator FarEasTone (FET) has become the first operator in the world to launch commercial LTE services in the APT700 band, according to Swedish vendor Ericsson, which supplied the network equipment for the launch. FET won both APT700 and 1800Mhz spectrum in the market’s October 2013 auction.
Australian carrier Telstra and trade bodies the GSMA and GSA on Monday launched a major promotion of the APT700 spectrum band for 4G networks. The Asia Pacific implementation of the ‘digital dividend’ frequency reclaimed from the move to digital TV has already been identified for use in markets covering more than two billion people and the industry bodies are pushing for global adoption in order to facilitate LTE roaming.
