UK LTE operator EE has switched on what it claims is the world’s fastest LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) network in London’s Tech City, claiming to offer speeds of 300Mbps. The network makes use of carrier aggregation – bringing together 20MHz of 1800MHz spectrum and 20MHz of 2.6GHz spectrum. More features will be trialled throughout 2014, EE said.
UK operator EE has launched the country’s first pay as you go (PAYG) 4G handset. The operator said that 40 per cent of mobile users in the UK want PAYG plans and that all 4G handsets currently available to pay monthly customers will be available on PAYG.
UK operator EE grew its postpaid LTE subscriber base by 72 per cent during the third quarter this year, ending the quarter on almost 1.2 million users. But at £1.43bn the firm’s service revenue was down 3.3 per cent year on year and 4.4 per cent sequentially as it continued to absorb the impact of regulation on termination rates and roaming charges.
Open source software developer Canonical has launched an operating system for both mobile handsets and PCs. Ubuntu 13.10 is the firm’s effort to create OS convergence across all devices and has been hailed by Canonical as the “first true mobile release of Ubuntu”. The firm added that it is working with partners to bring Ubuntu smartphone devices to market in 2014.
UK fixed line incumbent BT said Thursday it has signed an exclusive MVNO agreement with EE to provide mobile communications to its customers and 88,000 employees.
UK B2B player Virgin Media Business has launched a mobile service for its public and private sector customers piggybacking on UK mobile operator EE’s LTE network.
Apple has yet to grant O2 UK approval to offer its new 5s and 5c iPhone models on the operator’s newly launched LTE network. While O2 has denied failing any of Apple’s network approval tests, a spokesman confirmed that the tests have not yet been passed.
UK operator EE now has more one million LTE subscribers, the highest of any European operator, according to research firm Informa Telecoms and Media.

UK LTE pioneer EE has revealed that use of public and private wifi connections is dropping among its LTE subscription base. In a survey of its LTE customer base, EE found that 43 per cent were using “fewer or no public wifi hotspots” since moving to the technology.
Mobile operator O2, the UK arm of Spanish group Telefonica, has announced pricing details for its LTE services, which are due to be launched later this month. The operator’s prices undercut those of rival EE’s, which launched LTE services late October 2012. However, the data usage limits quoted in the price plans are lower than its rival.
All of the UK’s mobile network operators have extended their carrier billing offerings by connecting to Gemalto’s direct billing platform, the mobile security solutions provider announced.
The UK’s largest mobile network and only LTE operator, EE, has reported a 4.4 per cent drop in service revenue for the second quarter year on year, to £1.42bn. But the firm’s EBITDA margin for the first half of 2013 rose 2.6 per cent year on year to 22.9 per cent. The firm attributed its top line drop to regulatory measures affecting mobile termination rates and roaming revenues, without which service revenue would have been flat year on year for the second quarter, it said.
The UK’s mobile operators have been granted permission to redeploy their existing 2G and 3G radio spectrum for 4G services.
The UK’s first LTE operator, EE, has announced the availability of shared pricing plans for its LTE customers. The plans, which will become available July 17th, were announced as EE switched on what it is calling “double speed LTE”.

UK 4G spectrum licence winners BT and Vodafone have paid an additional fee to UK regulator Ofcom for preferred spectrum in the regulator’s final ‘assignment’ stage of the nation’s 4G auction. The final stage determines where each bidder’s holdings will sit in the radio spectrum.
