BT, Alcatel-Lucent reach 5Gbps over copper in XG.Fast lab trial

A joint BT and Alcatel-Lucent experiment has achieved throughput speeds of 5 Gbps in lab conditions as they explore the potential of a variation on G.fast broadband technology (XG.FAST). The technology also reached a speed of 1.8 Gbps over a distance of 100 metres, in early experiments on this new networking type.

Virgin Media today launched its Vivid 200Mbps broadband service with an offer to upgrade existing customers free. The Vivid brand will cover all its ‘ultrafast’ broadband services, including its 100Mbps offering.

Google’s floating cellular network and MVNO expected

Google’s SVP of Products, Sundar Pichai, confirmed in his speech at MWC that the OTT giant is in advanced testing of its floating cellular network, consisting of inflatable balloons and lightweight solar-powered planes. Projects “Loon” and “Titan”, respectively, are in the early phases of testing, but Pichai believes the two projects will provide a portable “mesh of floating cell towers”. He also confirmed the long-anticipated rumour that Google is looking to launch an MVNO in the US.

Almost one in three UK broadband connections superfast – Ofcom

According to research by Ofcom, almost one in three (32%) broadband connections in the UK are superfast, up from approximately one in four in November 2013. The regulator said increasing take-up of superfast, 30Mbps or above, cable and fibre services has increased the country’s average broadband speed by a fifth in the last six months to 22.8Mbps.

ITU approves G.fast standard

Members of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) have given their final approval to the broadband technology G.fast. Having the standard in place ensures the technology can now be made commercially available and used to complement fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) scenarios.
