Bouygues increases offer for SFR

French operator Bouygues Telecom has submitted an improved offer to conglomerate Vivendi to take ownership of rival SFR.

SFR fields merger bids from Bouygues, Altice

French conglomerate Vivendi was on Thursday fielding two competing bids for France’s second largest mobile operator, SFR. Both Bouygues Telecom and French cable operator Altice submitted merger offers.

Bouygues Telecom and SFR enter into network sharing agreement

French operators Bouyges Telecom and SFR have agreed to roll out a shared network covering 57 per cent of the French population. The operators will create a joint venture to manage the shared base station assets and a RAN share covering 2G, 3G and LTE services in the area covered by the network.

Orange includes European roaming in high-end contracts

French operator group Orange has said it has included roaming services in high-end tariffs for customers travelling across its entire European footprint. The operator has also launched an online portal to enable customers to remotely top up mobile credit for over 350 operators globally.

French operator Bouyges Telecom has introduced a plan that offers subscribers unlimited voice and text and 3GB of data to be used to and from all European countries and French overseas regions. The Sensation plan will be priced from €29.99 per month.

Orange faces €2bn tax bill as net income drops

French incumbent operator Orange has been hit with a tax bill of more than €2bn by the French government relating to a restructuring of the company eight years ago. While Orange plans to appeal the decision it must still make the payments that have been ordered, which total €1.95bn this month and a further €190m in September.

Orange launches Joyn in France

French mobile operator Orange on Wednesday became the first in the country to launch Joyn rich communications services. The announcement marks France as the ninth country to introduce Joyn, while 14 operators in total have pledged their support to the GSMA-backed initiative.

Orange rolls out NFC-SIMs across France

French incumbent Orange has begun offering NFC-enabled SIM cards nationwide in preparation for what it calls the “mass deployment” of mobile contactless services. The UpTeq NFC SIM cards are supplied by Gemalto and, the firms said, are the first SIMs on the market to offer the same security level as chip-based payment or smart cards.

LTE goes live in Marseille

French mobile operator Orange on Thursday activated its first LTE coverage area in the city of Marseille, promising connectivity speeds of up to 150Mbps. The operator said Lyon and Nantes will also 4G coverage by the end of the year, followed by 12 other cities by summer 2013.
