Gemalto wins China Unicom NFC supply deal

Digital security specialist Gemalto has announced a deal with Chinese operator China Unicom that will see the vendor supplying NFC-enabled SIM cards for Unicom’s upcoming mobile wallet platform. The operator, which has more than 220 million subscribers, is launching what Gemalto said was the first NFC payment service in China in collaboration with China Merchant’s bank.

Orange rolls out NFC-SIMs across France

French incumbent Orange has begun offering NFC-enabled SIM cards nationwide in preparation for what it calls the “mass deployment” of mobile contactless services. The UpTeq NFC SIM cards are supplied by Gemalto and, the firms said, are the first SIMs on the market to offer the same security level as chip-based payment or smart cards.

Mobile money service to serve unbanked in Mexico

Latin American operator group América Móvil is spearheading the launch of a mobile money service in Mexico, aimed to serve the nation’s underbanked population. The service, called Transfer, will be launched by a joint venture between the operator, Citibank´s Mexican unit Banamex and local bank Banco Inbursa.

Winners toast success at Informa LTE Awards 2011

The 2011 Informa LTE Awards winners were announced on Tuesday night at a gala event that was part of the LTE World Summit in Amsterdam, where the winners were finally announced to the industry. The ceremony, held at the spectacular De Duif in Amsterdam and compered by BBC television sports journalist Rob Bonnet, saw eight companies recognised for their achievements across ten categories. There were 49 nominations.

DT and Gemalto announce BMW telematics deployment

Deutsche Telekom and digital security and machine to machine (M2M) specialist Gemalto have announced that their M2M solution is being embedded by German auto manufacturer BMW as part of the European Commission’s eCall initiative, designed to enable rapid response assistance for people in road accidents.
