Spanish infrastructure player Abertis has formally announced the IPO of its telecoms operations, a manoeuvre made possible by spinning it off to form the wholly-owned subsidiary – Cellnex Telecom – at the start of this month.
Vodafone Wallet users will soon be able to make contactless card payments with their smartphones, the operator has announced. The telco has entered into partnerships with financial services firm Visa and transaction technology provider Carta Worldwide to offer the NFC SIM-based solution through the Vodafone Wallet app.
Telecom Italia has posted its 2014 full year results showing the telco achieved profits for the first time in three years. This follows the operator’s recently announced three-year strategic plan, under which it plans to invest some €14.5 billion to modernise its network infrastructure.

The telco also confirmed it is weighing up its options overall in the Brazilian market, and that it is considering a tie-up of its subsidiary Tim Participações with local competitor Oi.
UK-based media empire BSkyB created a multinational pay TV business on Friday with the £4.9bn acquisition of Sky Italia and a 57.4 per cent stake in Sky Deutschland. The move puts Sky in a leading position in the pay TV market in the UK, Italy and Germany.
The French and Italian mobile markets could both be on the verge of significant consolidation, according to reports from news agency Reuters. In France incumbent telco Orange has set two investment banks to investigate the potential takeover of rival Bouygues, while talks have resumed between Hutchison and Vimpelcom, which own 3 Italia and Wind respectively, about a potential merger. In both instances Reuteurs cited unnamed sources close to the situation.
Andrea Galeazzi, director of network services at Italian payments and technology infrastructure company SIA, has taken up a new role as chairman at Italian telecoms firm Emmecom. The move is part of SIA’s acquisition of the smaller firm, which took place in July and forms a key part of its European expansion plans.
Operator group Vodafone has confirmed reports that it has taken legal action against Telecom Italia, for abuse of a dominant position in the Italian market. The group is seeking damages of more than €1bn.
Hutchison Whampoa, which operates the 3 brand in Europe, has announced that it is to buy Telefónica’s Irish mobile operation O2 for €780m, with a further €70m payable if a number of agreed financial targets are hit. It is the second consolidatory move made by Hutchison in recent months, following the acquisition of Orange Austria, which was completed at the end of 2012.
Operator group Telecom Italia has confirmed it is in talks over a potential takeover of Hong Kong based Hutchison Whampoa’s Italian operation.
Vodafone has announced a loss of £1.89bn for the six months to the end of September 2012 on the back of write downs for its Spanish and Italian operations totaling £5.9bn. The international operator recorded a profit of £6.64bn for the same period in 2011 and chief executive Vittorio Colao said the 1H12 results reflected “tougher market conditions, mainly in Southern Europe”.
The Italian government has confirmed that the country’s LTE spectrum auction has closed with bids from the four local operators reaching in excess of €3.9bn, double the reserve price placed on the frequencies.
