It seems like we have been promised the internet on the London Underground for years, and it might well become a reality in the next couple of months.
We’ve joked before about how desperate Londoners are to avoid conversation, but now there is political clout behind the drive for connecting the London Underground. And it’s more complicated than you would think.
Without the distraction of smartphones Londoners can get dangerously close to talking to each other on the tube, but social interaction shouldn’t be an issue if TfL has anything to do with it.
London’s underground users will gain broadband access for the duration of summer 2012 after a contract was awarded to Virgin Media to provide public access wifi at up to 120 tube station platforms. The firm said that the implementation will come at no cost to the fare or taxpayer.
