Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has cast his sights on monetizing his OTT platforms Messenger and WhatsApp, but don’t expect miracles any time soon.
The social media giant unveiled Messenger Platform at its developer event – F8 – which is designed to help developers incorporate Messenger into their apps. Facebook reckons 600 million people use Messenger every month so integrating with it is an easy way to ‘socialise’ an app.
Facebook has been warned it risks alienating users as it seeks to grow the reach of its Facebook Messenger app as a platform for communications, content and commerce. The company has decided to remove its mobile app’s messaging capabilities in some European markets so that users have to download Facebook Messenger instead.
