After a four-month investigation the European Commission has approved the acquisition of Belgian MNO BASE by multinational cableco Liberty Global, subject to conditions.
Belgian operator Mobistar claims to have become the nation’s first to successfully test an LTE-A network, claiming mobile data throughput of over 200Mbps.
Belgium’s three mobile operators, Belgacom, Mobistar and KPN-owned Base have each received 2 x 10MHz of 800MHz spectrum in the country’s latest spectrum auction, at a price of €120m per allocation. There were no other entrants in the auction, which was run by Belgian regulator BIPT.
Dutch carrier KPN has entered into an agreement to sell its Belgian B2B and carrier business to local rival Mobistar for €65m.
