BT formally moves to acquire EE in bid to dominate UK telco market

Former UK telco monopoly BT has announced it has chosen the UK’s biggest mobile operator – EE – for exclusive acquisition talks, having previously conceded it was looking at O2 or EE. If the deal goes through BT would occupy a dominant position in the UK telco market as it already owns substantial fixed-line assets as well as a significant chuck of exclusive content and some 4G spectrum of its own.

Orange CEO expecting BT EE bid decision by Christmas

The Chief Executive of Orange, Stephane Richard, has dropped a hint about the ongoing discussions with BT over a possible acquisition of EE, allegedly stating that he’s expecting a decision from the British telco in the next few weeks.

Vodafone Greece targets multiplay with Hellas Online acquisition

Vodafone Greece has moved closer to becoming a multiplay service provider by acquiring 72.7% of Hellas Online (HOL), the country’s second largest broadband and fixed-line services provider. The mobile operator acquired Hellas Online for a total cash sum of €72.7m (£57.56m).

BT confirms discussions with Telefónica to acquire O2 UK

UK telco giant BT has confirmed it is in discussions to acquire O2, following reports that the CEO of Telefónica has indicated he is open to some kind of strategic alliance with BT in the UK, which could include selling off O2 UK in return for a stake in BT.

Telefónica to acquire Spanish pay-TV player

Spanish media group Prisa has accepted incumbent operator Telefónica’s €725m bid for its 56 per cent stake in pay TV platform Canal+’s holding company Distribuidora de Televisión Digital (DTS). The deal gives DTS a market value of €1.3bn (US$1.8bn) and, if approved by regulators, will give Telefónica a controlling stake of 78 per cent, leaving Italy’s Mediaset with a 22 per cent holding.

Vodafone NL to deploy IPTV solution from Entone

Cloud TV and connected home specialist Entone has announced a deal with Vodafone Netherlands that will see the Dutch operator deploying the Californian supplier’s IPTV services. Under the Vodafone Thuis brand, Vodafone will deliver TV services including video-on-demand and Pause Live TV over its FTTH network.

Multiplay seen as key differentiator, says survey

Integrated or multiplay service offerings are seen as one of the top three means of differentiation among mobile operators in their market, according to almost one quarter (23.1 per cent) of operator respondents to the Telecoms.com Intelligence Industry Survey 2014.

Orange Spain deploys Viaccess-Orca solution for multi-platform TV offering

Viaccess-Orca has announced a deal with Orange Spain that will see the telco adopt its TV Everywhere services for a multiscreen content service launched by Orange at the end of September. The deal comes in the wake of wins for Viaccess-Orca with Orange in France in 2011, Poland in 2012 and Romania earlier this year.
