UK LTE leader EE has revealed that 4G subscriber sign-ups overtook 3G subscriptions during this month. The firm now has 3.6 million LTE customers and CEO Olaf Swantee, who announced the landmark “tipping point” at a media briefing Wednesday, forecast that the number will grow to six million by the end of this year.
A report on the performance of UK mobile operators that named Vodafone as having the poorest overall network performance of the country’s four operators has drawn strong criticism from the firm. Network performance monitoring specialist RootMetrics published its UK mobile network performance review Thursday, ranking Vodafone in last place for network reliability, mobile internet performance and call and text performance.
UK network joint venture MBNL, created by T-Mobile and 3UK in 2007 and now owned by 3 with EE, is getting a change of management as the organisation shifts from the integration of the various UK networks held by its parents to an operational and cost-control model. Graham Payne, MBNL’s managing director and financial director Brian More O’Ferrall, are to leave the company, to be replaced by Pat Coxen of EE and Gervase King of 3UK.
The UK’s largest mobile network and only LTE operator, EE, has reported a 4.4 per cent drop in service revenue for the second quarter year on year, to £1.42bn. But the firm’s EBITDA margin for the first half of 2013 rose 2.6 per cent year on year to 22.9 per cent. The firm attributed its top line drop to regulatory measures affecting mobile termination rates and roaming revenues, without which service revenue would have been flat year on year for the second quarter, it said.
The UK’s mobile operators have been granted permission to redeploy their existing 2G and 3G radio spectrum for 4G services.
The UK’s first LTE operator, EE, has announced the availability of shared pricing plans for its LTE customers. The plans, which will become available July 17th, were announced as EE switched on what it is calling “double speed LTE”.
