BlackBerry offloads R&D unit to Volkswagen

Although device and software maker BlackBerry has fallen on hard times, it’s long been thought the company may carve a niche for itself in the automotive software space. So it was unsurprising when the company revealed this week that it has sold its European research and development centre in Bochum, Germany, to local auto firm Volkswagen.

Siemens offloads telecom R&D to Tieto

German equipment firm Siemens has signed an agreement to offload much of what remains of its communications R&D operations to Nordic IT services firm Tieto. The Finnish company will take on the Network Directory Server (NDS); IP Multimedia Systems (IMS); Home Location Register (HLR) and Radio Access (RA) businesses from a unit called Siemens Convergence Creators.

ST-Ericsson begins to offload R&D resources

Embattled chipset firm ST-Ericsson has agreed to transfer its R&D division based in Linköping, Sweden, to local IT consultancy Cybercom. The move follows recent speculation regarding the future of ST-Ericsson, the 50/50 joint venture between Ericsson and STMicroelectronics, as the company battles with rising losses and suggests more changes are still to come.

HP to refocus on organic development

HP’s newly installed CEO, Leo Apotheker, has taken a “brave new approach” with the company, which this week posted a five per cent increase in earnings year on year. Whereas former CEO Mark Hurd made HP an efficient technology company by reducing the cost of doing business as well as R&D spend, Apotheker has vowed to increase organic development initiatives.

Vodafone names new chief of R&D

Vodafone, the world’s biggest carrier by revenues this week announced the appointment of Siavash Alamouti as its group research and development director, effective March 1, 2010.
