Spain’s leading carriers shelled out more than €1.65bn between them in the latest round of LTE spectrum auctions to take place in Europe. Telefónica, Orange and Vodafone walked away with spectral spoils in the 800MHz and 2.6GHz band after an auction process last week.
UK regulator Ofcom has published its proposals for the introduction of spectrum trading in the UK mobile market. The guidelines allow for trading of all 900MHz, 1800MHz and 2100MHz spectrum. This will be the first time that UK operators have been allowed to transfer their spectrum assets to one another, and Ofcom will act as the administrator for all transactions.
UK communications regulator Ofcom has finally been given the go ahead to move forward with the auctioning of 4G spectrum, as well as the refarming of 2G spectrum so it can be used for 3G services. However, ongoing delays have put the country behind other parts of Western Europe and operators are unlikely to get their hands on the attractive 2.6GHz band before 2012.
