Swisscom risks fine over anticompetitive sports broadcasting

Swisscom has rejected an allegation by the country’s competition watchdog that its pay TV unit Teleclub is abusing its dominant position and must sell its service to third-party service providers in a fair and non-discriminatory way, reports Digital TV Europe.

Swiss telcos form net neutrality agreement

The four leading Swiss service providers, as well as the country’s cable operator association Swisscable, have joined forces to formulate an official code of conduct on net neutrality. Swisscom, Sunrise, UPC Cablecom and Orange, as well as Swisscable, are working to keep the internet open in Switzerland, according to an official statement from Swisscom.

Telcos voice concerns about taking core networks to the cloud

Under threat from companies not traditionally viewed as competitors, telcos are racing to both offer cloud services to end-user customers and tap into the cloud to run core network functions in a bid to make their value propositions more competitive and infrastructure more dynamic. But cloud experts from Orange, Swisscom and AT&T have each voiced concerns around just how capable the sector may be at managing such a bold transformation with existing tools.

TeliaSonera completes management reshuffle

European operator group TeliaSonera has continued ringing the changes, appointing Swisscom executive Henriette Wendt as its head of group corporate development. Wendt currently serves as Swisscom’s head of corporate strategy and participation management and will assume her new role in August.

Swisscom appoints new CEO

Swiss incumbent operator Swisscom has appointed Urs Schaeppi as CEO. Schaeppi has been acting CEO since July 23, following the death of former CEO Carsten Schloter. He has been at the firm for 15 years and has previously held roles as head of Swisscom (Switzerland) and head of corporate business.

Swiss Post trials SMS stamps

The Swiss postal service Swiss Post has launched a trial that will allow consumers to pay to send letters using premium SMS. If a customer who wants to send a letter has no stamps they can text “STAMP” to a dedicated short number and receive a numerical code in return. If they write this code on the envelope where they would normally attach a stamp delivery will be authorised.

Swisscom CEO dead in apparent suicide

The CEO of Swisscom, Carsten Schloter, was found dead at his home in Freiburg yesterday in what local police are describing as an apparent suicide. Schloter joined Swisscom in 2000 as the head of the firm’s mobile operation, becoming group CEO in 2006.

More operators are increasingly turning their attention to roaming now that LTE deployments are emerging from the initial rollout stage. This week Swisscom joined the early adopters in providing LTE roaming services, courtesy of Ericsson.

Switzerland’s biggest phone company Swisscom, has offered to buy Italian player, FastWeb for Eur 3.7bn (£2.5bn) in cash. Switzerland’s leading telephone company Swisscom AG, has been fined SF333.4m (£138.51m) by the country’s competition watchdog for overcharging rivals including France Telecom SA’s Orange unit.
