EE top in P3 UK mobile benchmarking test, Vodafone last

Network testing and consultancy firm P3 has published a UK mobile benchmarking report ranking EE, aided by its strong data service, first. Three came second, although it won in the voice category. O2 was marginally ahead of last-placed Vodafone.

Operators say RIPA customer record sharing is old news

EE, Vodafone and Three have responded to the story recently published by the Guardian, and followed up by many other media, about the automated sharing of customer call records with law enforcement officers. They insist the practices have been in place for some time to comply with existing law.

Mobile video volume on LTE already 5x greater than 3G

A report commissioned by analytics vendor Citrix has revealed the extent of LTE-based video streaming growth. The report focuses on the consumption of LTE-based services among global tier 1 operators; and concludes LTE is already generating five times greater data volume than 3G at operators that offer both.

Over three quarters of UK users satisfied with mobile provider

UK communications regulator Ofcom has released research showing that while overall levels of consumer satisfaction with mobile networks are high, an estimated 45 per cent of users experience some problems. Moreover, around 30 per cent of users experience no reception at least once a week.

Three joins London Tube wifi network

UK fibre network operator and cableco Virgin Media has added cellular player Three as the latest wholesale partner for its wifi on the London Underground service. By the end of July, Three customers will be able to access wifi at over 144 Tube stations for no extra cost.

3 Austria gets Android carrier billing

Hutchison Whampoa’s 3 group has successfully integrated Google Play direct carrier billing into the network of its Austrian subsidiary, 3 Austria. The company has already rolled out the system in Sweden, Ireland and Hong Kong, allowing apps and other digital goods such as books, music, games as well as the music streaming service Music All Access to be paid for via the mobile bill.

UK moving towards operator billing for physical goods

UK operators could soon be facilitating payments for physical goods bought by subscribers via carrier billing services. Direct operator billing firm, Mach, has now signed Vodafone, Everything Everywhere, O2 and 3UK up to its Direct Operator Billing platform for digital goods, and said that the use of such a solution to purchase physical goods is on the horizon.

Samsung deploys Three UK’s LTE network

In a major coup for the Korean firm, Samsung has secured its first significant European network contract by signing a deal to supply 3UK with LTE Radio Access Network (RAN) and 3G/LTE core infrastructure equipment.

Ad-supported mobile broadband service launched in UK

An MVNO that offers free mobile data in return for viewing adverts has launched in the UK. Samba Mobile is available for tablet and laptop owners and offers users a range of interactive adverts to drive engagement.

Vodafone and 3 in Irish network sharing deal

Mobile operators 3 and Vodafone are set to embark on a network sharing agreement in Ireland. A source close to the deal told Telecoms.com that the two operators are in advanced discussions regarding a joint infrastructure partnership.

Three aims for connected devices market with Macheen tie-up

3UK has signed an agreement with Macheen, a cloud service provider for connected devices. The deal provides the operator with access to a platform for the management of a variety of processes that are required to create, manage and bill M2M-related services.

3UK says 97 per cent of the traffic on its network is data

Mobile operator 3UK has announced that 97 per cent of all the traffic travelling through its network today is data. The carrier added that in the 14 months between June 2010 and September 201, it has seen a 427 per cent increase in data usage for smartphone customers.

Ofcom postpones UK 4G auction

UK regulator Ofcom has announced that it will delay the 4G spectrum auction until the final quarter of 2012 at the earliest. Ofcom said that it received a number of “substantial and strongly argued responses” to its initial plans and will undertake a further round of consultation to address issues raised.
