Huawei unveils technology strategy underpinned by 4.5G ahead of MWC 2015

Huawei has made a host of announcements ahead of Mobile World Congress 2015, offering a peek at its LTE-connected smartband and unveiling plans for a commercialised 4.5G technology next year. Facebook has moved to acquire video optimisation specialist, QuickFire Networks, in a bid to upgrade its mobile video hosting capabilities. The San Diego-based startup utilises bandwidth compression technology to reduce the amount of capacity required to host video online.

TalkTalk acquires blinkbox in multiplay move

TalkTalk has confirmed the completed acquisition of video on-demand provider blinkbox Movies from Tesco, as well as its broadband subscriber base. As the UK market continues to see M&A activity towards converged, multiplay service offerings, the acquisition has expanded TalkTalk’s available range of TV and video content.

Huawei chooses Skyfire for NFV video optimization

Chinese vendor Huawei has commenced a strategic partnership with Opera Software’s Skyfire unit to incorporate Skyfire’s Rocket Optimizer cloud-based video QoE solution into its Cloud Edge Virtual Multi-Service Engine (vMSE).

Mobile edge video delivery demonstrated by Nokia and StarHub

Nokia Networks has enabled live video streaming based on an LTE base station-enabled local content caching system. In partnership with Singaporean operator StarHub, Nokia helped to deliver a live streaming, multi-camera broadcast of the WTA tennis championships live from Singapore.

Telstra acquires video analytics company Ooyala

Australian service provider Telstra is to acquire video streaming and analytics specialist Ooyala for US$270 million (€201 million), writes Digital TV Europe. Telstra, which already owns a 23% stake in Ooyala, has invested US$61 million in the company over the last two years. The acquisition, via Telstra’s Global Applications and Partners unit, is expected to close within the next 60 days.

Yahoo continues buying spree with Qwiki purchase

Yahoo continued its acquisition spree on Tuesday, jumping on the micro video bandwagon with the acquisition of Qwiki. The US startup has iPad and iPhone tools that turn a user’s photos and videos into short movie montages.

Mobile video offers key opportunity says Clearwire CTO

The ability to deliver a superior experience for mobile video will be key to Clearwire’s success, its CTO John Saw has said. Speaking at the LTE North America conference, Saw described video as “the closest thing for a potential killer app for 4G”, due to viewing via LTE being quantitatively better than 3G.

DoCoMo picks up rest of PacketVideo

Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo said Monday it has acquired the remaining 65 per cent of multimedia software firm PacketVideo that it did not already own. The move takes PacketVideo out of the hands of US wireless broadband vendor NextWave Wireless and makes it a wholly owned DoCoMo subsidiary.
