VimpelCom, Weather merge to create new telco giant

Russia’s second biggest operator, VimpelCom, has merged with Egypt-based Orascom Telecom and investment vehicle Weather Investments, creating the world’s fifth largest mobile telecommunications carrier by subscribers.

Vimpelcom and Orascom in talks to merge assets

Russian operator Vimpelcom and Egypt’s Orascom Telecom are reported to be close to finalising a deal to merge their telecoms assets. The merger would propel the newly created entity into the top ten largest mobile operators worldwide. The deal would also include Weather Investments, majority owned by Orascom chief Naguib Sawiris.

VimpelCom 2Q10 profit drops 52% to $334.7m

Second placed Russian mobile operator VimpelCom reported a 52 per cent year-on-year drop in 2Q10 net profit to $334.7m. Revenues rose by 23.1 per cent year-on-year to $2.64bn. Stable pricing and higher usage led to ARPU increase of 7.2 per cent in Russia.

VimpelCom targets robots in Russia

Telenor, Altimo bury hatchet, merge assets

VimpelCom buys into Laos

Second placed Russian carrier VimpelCom said Thursday that it has struck a deal to acquire a 78 per cent stake in Laotian mobile operator Millicom Lao for around $66m.

Boris Nemsic, CEO Vimpelcom

Having built a portfolio of smaller operations in Central and Eastern Europe as the CEO of Telekom Austria, Boris Nemsic moved in April this year to Vimpelcom, the second-placed Russian carrier that has a portfolio of interests in the CIS as well as Vietnam and Cambodia. The move was a big step up—Telekom Austria had 16.8 million users when Nemsic left compared to Vimpelcom’s 60.9 million.

VimpelCom launches in Cambodia

Second placed Russian carrier VimpelCom on Monday took its Beeline brand to the kingdom of Cambodia, where it launched mobile services via its subsidiary Sotelco.

Telenor hit with $1.7bn bill over Ukrainian quarrel
