Smart grids get wifi, powerline support

Two industry initiatives, the Wi-Fi Alliance and the HomePlug Powerline Alliance, have joined forces this week to push wifi and powerline technologies in smart grid applications.

London Underground trials wifi

London Underground has teamed up with BT Openzone in a six-month trial of wifi at Charing Cross tube station. The trial will include live Transport for London (TfL) service updates available to all. O2, Tesco Mobile, Vodafone and Orange users can also use the BT Openzone network.

Wifi systems manufacturer Ruckus Wireless has introduces a complete range of carrier-grade wifi products to give operators more capacity, range and reliability in unlicensed spectrum.

T-Mobile USA extends wifi calling to Android

T-Mobile USA is to make wifi calling available on a wide selection of its Android-powered smartphones including the recently announced T-Mobile myTouch and Motorola Defy. Customers wifi access points are powered by Kineto’s Smart Wi-Fi Application. T-Mobile said it hosts approximately 40 million wifi calls per month.

McDonald’s serves up free wifi

Hungry consumers will soon have free wifi served up alongside their Big Mac and fries as McDonald’s revises its communications menu. On Monday, Maccy D’s said that a strategic reorganisation of the restaurant chain’s telecoms services meant that customers will be able to connect to the internet free of charge in almost 1,200 UK locations.
