Alcatel-Lucent wins Telefónica IP network project

The Spanish telco is expanding its Movistar TV, Canal+ and VOD services and is deploying A-Lu’s IP Routing portfolio to expand capacity.

Telefónica is hoping to grow its VOD and catch-up TV customer base to four million punters by the end of this year and is using A-Lu’s cloud DVR platform for delivery. The three year Fusión Red IP project aims to simplify the network by halving the number of network layers to four, with residential and business services converging, thus increasing efficiency.

“As we ramp up our video and high-bandwidth data service offers we are committed to delivering the best possible quality of experience for our customers,” said Joaquín Mata, Network Technology and Operations Director at Telefónica Spain. “By working with Alcatel-Lucent to leverage its IP routing and services expertise we will be able to manage our network with even greater efficiency.”

The specific A-Lu gear being use is the7950 Extensible Routing System, the 7450 Ethernet Service Switch, the 7750 Service Router and the 620 Service Aware Manager. A-Lu is also providing Telefónica a full set of managed services and consulting and the two companies are also collaborating on NFV.
