WiMAX kit vendor Alvarion said this week that it has won a contract to deploy infrastructure in the 3.3GHz spectrum for UK network provider Metranet.

Metranet is operating in this frequency through a Non-Operational Temporary license from regulator Ofcom.

Alvarion’s BreezeMAX base stations and CPEs will enable Metranet to provide backhaul for it network of CCTV cameras and traffic junction control boxes throughout Reading.

Live video from main roads and junctions is streamed back to a central control room, and traffic lights can then be manually controlled via the WiMAX network to improve traffic flow. Automatic License Plate recognition is also being built into the system.

Metranet said it could significantly reduce costs for bandwidth intensive applications such as CCTV, compared to wired infrastructure.
