IPhone and Android platform hacker David Wang has caused a flurry of excitement in the developer community by demonstrating that Android can in fact run on the iPhone 3G, and it’s looking pretty good, although audio hasn’t made it across yet.
A little rougher round the edges than Wang’s previous port of the Android OS to the iPhone 2G, the 3G version of the platform enables the running of any application that does not require audio support, as well as the ability to send and receive text messages.
Wang has made a number of other improvements to this version, including fleshing out the wifi driver with all the Android-specific extensions, making it more stable and reliable.
Wang said that next up is audio support: “We’ve already laid the groundwork for audio support on the 3G and gotten it working in our homemade bootloader, so support for audio in Linux/Android will be coming in a few days.”
Ultimately, Wang said that: “The hope is that you should soon be able to carry around your first-generation iPhone or iPhone 3G running Android and use it just as normally as you would any other Android phone.”
