Showing off its green credentials this week, embattled telecoms vendor Motorola unveiled what it claims is the world’s first carbon neutral phone – made from recycled water bottles.

The plastic housing of the Moto W233 Renew is made using plastics comprised of recycled water bottles and is 100% recyclable. Through an alliance with Carbonfund.org, Moto also offsets the carbon dioxide required to manufacture, distribute and operate the phone through investments in renewable energy sources and reforestation.

The vendor has reduced packaging for the gadget by 22 per cent as well as using recyclable materials and including a recycling envelope for old phones.

The Renew will be available through T-Mobile USA during the first quarter of 2009.

In other news, Moto also took the wraps off a Windows 6.1 based touch screen tablet 3G device, featuring a streamlined and user customisable home screen on top of the Microsoft OS.

The MotoSurf A3100 will also be available worldwide during the first quarter.
