Mozilla releases Firefox OS prototype

Open source software developer Mozilla has released a prototype version of its lightweight mobile operating system Firefox OS. The OS is available as a prototype module, which developers can run on Windows, Mac and Linux computers.

Mozilla said that it is collaborating with OEMs and operators directly to give them more influence to meet the needs of their users and market. Users and developers aren’t locked in to one platform, so they can access their info and use apps across multiple devices.

Firefox OS will enable OEMs and operators to provide content and services across their entire device portfolio, regardless of OS, and they will be able to customise user experiences, manage app distribution and retain customer attention, loyalty and billing relationships, said Mozilla.

The initial Firefox OS-based handsets are expected to arrive in 2013.
